
Chiesa Vittorio
Full Professor
Vittorio Chiesa is a Full Professor at Politecnico di Milano (Department of Management Engineering), where he teaches Strategy & Marketing and Management of Energy in the Master’s Degree program in Management Engineering.
Since 2020, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of MIP Graduate School of Business (Graduate School of Management of Politecnico di Milano). He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Management Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.
He graduated cum laude in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 1984 and initially gained corporate experience at Ciba-Geigy and Pirelli. He earned a diploma in ‘Management of Research Development and Technology-based Innovation’ (summer program) at MIT in Boston. He has been a researcher at the National Research Council, Associate Professor at the University of Castellanza, and Full Professor at the University of Milano – Bicocca. In 1992, he was a Visiting Researcher at the London Business School, and in 2000, a Guest Professor of Innovation Management at the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands).
At MIP Graduate School of Business (Business School of Politecnico di Milano), he is Director of the Master in Energy Management and the Executive Path in Energy Management.
He is the author of 6 books and over 200 publications in journals and international conference proceedings.
He serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Technology Forecasting and Planning and the International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management. He is also an Editorial Advisor for the R&D Management journal.
He was listed among the Top 60 World’s Innovation Management Scholars in an analysis covering the period 1991–2010.
He has coordinated and managed joint university-industry projects and technology transfer initiatives (funded by Fondazione Cariplo, Regione Lombardia, Cestec, Milan Chamber of Commerce, ENEA, UNIDO), as well as national interest projects (funded by MIUR, CNR) on energy sector analysis, green economy, innovation management, and the creation of university spin-offs and start-ups.

Research
His research activities focus on three main areas: strategic management and innovation management in companies; business strategy and competitive dynamics in science- and technology-intensive sectors (particularly energy and biotechnology); economic evaluation of intangible assets (technologies, patents, trademarks, licenses).
Since 2007, he has led the Energy & Strategy Group at the Department of Management Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. This research group, comprising over 40 researchers and faculty members, serves as a permanent observatory on energy transition topics (renewable energy, energy efficiency, digital energy, sustainable mobility, electricity market), as well as sustainability, decarbonization, and circular economy. The group collaborates with over 150 companies and financial institutions. To date, more than 90 reports have been published. The Energy & Strategy Group also conducts research and consulting activities for leading national and multinational companies and institutions.

Community service
He is the founder of ES+, a spin-off company of Politecnico di Milano that develops decision-support tools for decarbonization strategies and energy transition management.
He is a member of the Investment Committee of the TTVenture fund of Indaco Venture Partners SGR and has previously served on the Investment Committees of funds dedicated to the green economy, renewable energy, and energy efficiency, such as Atmos and Investimenti Rinnovabili. He is Chairman of the Scientific Committee of Mostra Convegno Expocomfort.
In the past, he has held various positions, including: representative of the Ministry of University and Research on the Steering Committee of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan for the European Commission; President of the Italian Association of Management Engineering (AiIG); Coordinator of the Technical-Scientific Committee of the Directorate General for Crafts and Services of the Lombardy Region; Member of the Biotechnology Steering Committee of the Ministry of Productive Activities and of the Network of Biotech Officials of the European Commission; Member of the Stakeholders Advisory Board of Edison.
