Founded in 1990 as the Department of Economics and Production (DEP), it acquired its current name in 2001, together with the definition of its three main research areas. Today, the DIG is particularly committed to promoting sustainable development through its teaching, research and impact activities, which have made it an international benchmark for management engineering education.

Mission e Vision

Making innovation a common good

This is the mission of the Department of Management Engineering, pursued in the awareness that the challenges of the economic context, due to their complexity and systemic nature, require a strongly interdisciplinary scientific and educational approach, open to innovation and driven by principles of responsibility and sustainability, which must characterise all its projects, activities and initiatives.

The DIG works with the objective of:

  • creating knowledge through excellent, rigorous and impactful research;
  • sharing knowledge through high-quality training, disseminating critical awareness of the opportunities offered by technology and training responsible leaders.
  • participating in the activities of the scientific and academic community, businesses, institutions and civil society in a spirit of collaboration, aimed at fostering sustainable business practices and the adoption of virtuous policies.

Department of Excellence

The DIG was selected as the department with the highest score among the “departments of excellence” by the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research (MIUR) for the period 2023–2027 (Italian Law 232/2016). MIUR also funded the HumanTech (Humans & Technologies) research programme dedicated to the study of the complex relationship between people and digital technologies in the development of sustainable, resilient and inclusive industrial systems.

Spaces

The Department's premises were renovated in 2022 to provide innovative, wellness- and collaboration-oriented working environments with better lighting, suitable for different working modes and attentive to energy savings.

In particular, they were designed to stimulate exchange and sharing, thanks to more common areas with different functionalities and a strong integrated technological component.

La School of Management

The Department is part of the POLIMI School of Management (SoM), founded in 2003, which also includes the POLIMI Graduate School of Management.

The SoM houses the research, training and impact activities in the fields of management, industrial engineering and applied economics of the Politecnico di Milano.
Its educational activities consist of both study programmes at the Politecnico di Milano (in particular the master's degree in Management Engineering) and post-graduate and post-experience programmes, such as MBAs, specialised master's and executive programmes and, finally, courses dedicated to the world of business and institutions.
The School also offers a PhD course in Management Engineering and contributes to two other PhD programmes at the Politecnico di Milano.
