Polenghi Adalberto

Researcher

Adalberto Polenghi is an Assistant Professor in the Manufacturing Group at the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. He earned his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the same University with a dissertation focused on improving maintenance practice through ontological models for advanced information management and integration. He is actively involved in international and national research projects, as well as industrial collaborations, in various sectors, like manufacturing, railway and utilities. He teaches and manages undergraduate and graduate courses at Politecnico di Milano, specializing in the design and management of production systems. He is part of the Core Faculty of the POLIMI GSOM (Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Management), for which he leads and teaches various courses on maintenance and Industrial Asset Management. Additionally, he is part of the IFAC TC5.1 (Manufacturing Plant Control) AMEST WG (Advanced Maintenance Engineering, Services and Technologies Working Group) and a member of the UNI/CT 153 - Industrial Automation Committee (Italian Standards Body).

Career

PHD: Industrial Engineering, Politecnico di Milano.

Master of Science: Mechanical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano.

Research

The research interests of Adalberto mainly relates to the design and management of of production systems within the scientific-disciplinary sector IIND-05/A – Mechanical Industrial Plants.

Specifically, Smart Maintenance, Reliability Engineering, Prognostics and Health Management as well as Engineering Asset Management are core parts of his research and projects. Additionally, he is developing research on how XR/AR/VR and AI can improve the design of production systems alongside technologies like Digital Twin and AI.

He adopts various models and algorithms for his research, from statistical approaches and simulation to Machine Learning models as well as symbolic AI, such as ontology engineering. Most of his research is co-design and/or applied in companies in different sectors, like automotive, Oil&Gas, railway infrastructure and utilities.
